Ryan Hughes – Assistant Coach – 11th Season

Ryan Hughes enters his tenth season as an assistant coach for Santa Rosa Junior College Volleyball, bringing a deep passion for the game and a commitment to athlete development. A native of Sunnyvale, CA, Hughes began his volleyball journey at Homestead High School before continuing to make his mark at the collegiate level.

At Sonoma State University, Hughes founded the SSU Men’s Volleyball Club team, serving as its inaugural club president. His leadership and skill on the court earned him national recognition, including the title of Best Libero in the Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL) in 2006.

Hughes began his coaching career in Sonoma County as one of the first coaches at Sonoma Academy High School. He later took over the varsity program at Petaluma High School, guiding the team to four playoff appearances in five seasons. During this time, he also served as the head coach at Petaluma Middle School and as an assistant coach at Pacific Union College, further refining his coaching expertise.

Since joining SRJC in 2014, Hughes has been instrumental in the program’s growth and success. His dedication to player development, strategic approach, and infectious energy have helped elevate the team’s performance. Known for his positive coaching style and approachable demeanor, he continues to be a valuable asset to the Bear Cub program.

Off the court, Hughes balances his coaching career with a profession in healthcare, working as an ICU nurse while remaining an active competitor in local adult volleyball leagues.
