Second-Quarter Surge Carries Bear Cubs Past Cosumnes River, 56–46

​Two days after the Bear Cubs lost to the visiting Falcons of Folsom Lake College, the Bear Cubs (13-3, 2-1) hosted the Hawks (8-8, 0-4) of Cosumnes River College. The Hawks jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest, as they forced the Bear Cubs to commit four turnovers. Hailey Webb finally got the Bear Cubs on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer at the 6:50 mark. On their next two possessions Elle Picard drew a shooting foul and made one free throw, and then Sydney Martin drained a 3-pointer off of Webb's assist. Aletha Singleton's field goal gave Cosumnes River a 12-7 lead with 5:30 on the clock. During the remainder of the quarter, Jordan Washington scored four points on a drive and a 1-footer off of Picard's assist, and Martin made one of two free throws. Angel Dean and Singleton scored four points off of steals to end the period with a 16-12 advantage.

Kaia Eubanks put in the first two points of the second quarter on a low post move on the Bear Cubs' opening possession. Angel Dean made a basket 10 seconds later. The Bear Cubs turned the tables on the Hawks by scoring 16 unanswered points—Jordan Washington's 8-footer off a baseline inbounds pass from Elle Picard, Eubanks' steal and layup, Washington's putback, her 1-foot turnaround shot, two free throws by Eubanks, Sydney Martin's 12-footer off of Picard's baseline inbounds pass, one free throw by Eubanks, Martin's 1-footer off of Eubanks' pass, and one free throw by Picard—to take the lead for good 30-18 with 1:44 on the clock. Aletha Singleton sank the Hawks' only other basket of the quarter with 50 seconds left. The Bear Cubs added four more points on Shasta Vlasak's drive and Washington's steal and layup with eight seconds to go, making their halftime lead 34-20.

Jordan Washington started the scoring in the third quarter with an 18-footer. Aletha Singleton sank a basket 55 seconds later. Washington banked in a 1-footer off of Elle Picard's assist, and 50 seconds after that Zakara Cooper made a field goal. Abby Tacla scored on a drive, and then Ariel Bailey put in a 2-pointer. After Kaia Eubanks' fast break layup, Bailey drew a shooting foul and made one free throw at the 4:30 mark. The Bear Cubs finished the quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers by Hailey Webb and Sydney Martin, and Hattie Piper's drive from the top of the key. The Hawks tallied four points on a field goal each by Fifta Grewe and Singleton, as the Bear Cubs increased their lead to 50-31 by the end of the quarter.

​The Hawks scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, as the Bear Cubs committed turnovers and missed shots. Jordan Washington put in two free throws at the 5:58 mark. Peyton Thorpe made one free throw over a minute later. With 4:35 on the clock, Shasta Vlasak pulled down an offensive rebound, took a few dribbles, and tossed in the shot. The Hawks made a 6-0 run in the next two minutes following Bear Cubs' turnovers, to close the gap to 44-54 with 2:40 left. Washington scored on a low post spin move with 1:20 remaining. Following Peyton Thorpe's basket with 10 seconds remaining, the Hawks called a timeout. Coach Campbell diagramed an inbounds play against the Hawks' full court press. When play resumed, Elle Picard passed to just beyond half court to a streaking Kaia Eubanks, who banked in the uncontested layup, making the final score 58-46.

​The Bear Cubs committed eight turnovers in the first quarter, enabling the Hawks to jump out to an early lead. They only turned the ball over three times in the second quarter, as they were able to overtake the Hawks and assume the lead for good. The Hawks again outscored the Bear Cubs in the fourth quarter as they were able to force their hosts to turn the ball over six times. Two Hawks reached double figures: Ariel Bailey with 12 and Aletha Singleton 11.

Jordan Washington played limited minutes, yet still led the Bear Cubs with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Kaia Eubanks and Sydney Martin both reached double figures with 11 points each. Hailey Webb made two 3-pointers for 6 points. Shasta Vlasak added 4 points, Elle Picard, Abby Tacla, and Hattie Piper 2 each. Elle Picard and Abby Tacla each grabbed 6 rebounds. Elle Picard passed for 7 assists.
