SRJC Battles at Delta Classic, Secures Two Wins

The Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Volleyball team competed in the Delta Classic this past weekend, taking on some of the toughest teams in the state. The Bear Cubs came away with two victories, improving their overall record and enter the state's top 25 ranking.

Match 1: #25 SRJC vs. #6 Fresno City College (L, 3-0) The tournament began with a challenging match against 6th in the state ranked Fresno City College, where SRJC fell in straight sets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-12. Despite the loss, the Bear Cubs showed flashes of strong play, but Fresno's defense and firepower were too much to overcome in this contest.

Match 2: #25 SRJC vs. Hartnell College (W, 3-2) In one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament, SRJC faced off against Hartnell College in a five-set battle. After winning the first two sets, 25-17 and 26-24 the Bear Cubs battled with everything they had to close out the set. They dropped the third set 24-26 and fourth set 18-25. In the deciding fifth set, SRJC displayed true endurance in a 15-11 victory. It was a gritty performance that highlighted the team's resilience and ability to perform under pressure. Sarah Thornton led all attackers with 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage.

Match 3: #25 SRJC vs. Mendocino College (W, 3-1) Building on the momentum from their previous match, SRJC took on Mendocino College and won convincingly in four sets. The Bear Cubs started strong with a 25-17 first set win before narrowly dropping the second set, 23-25. However, SRJC rebounded in the third set with a 25-18 win and closed out the match with a dominant 25-10 victory in the fourth set. The balanced attack and focused defense helped seal their second victory of the tournament. Katy Brenninger returned to play with an impressive 16 kill performance, with a hitting percentage of .517. Sierra Yates-Bruch and Natalie Walsh each tallied 22 assists.

Match #28: #25 SRJC vs. #21 Shasta College (L, 3-1) In their final match of the Delta Classic, SRJC faced Shasta College in a competitive four-set contest. Despite strong efforts, the Bear Cubs fell short, losing 3-1. Shasta took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18, before SRJC rallied to win the third set 25-21. However, Shasta closed out the match with a 25-14 victory in the fourth set. Though the match ended in a loss, SRJC fought hard, showcasing their determination and ability to battle in each set. Jaiden Brooner had an impressive 26 digs, maintaining her state-leading campaign.

The Bear Cubs finished the Delta Classic with a 2-2 record, displaying growth and resilience throughout the tournament. They will wrap-up their preseason play this week, at Solano Community College on Friday, with matches at 2pm and 4pm.
