Road Trip Round-Up: Bear Cubs Secure Wins Against Lemoore and Cerro Coso, Fall to Taft in a Battle

The SRJC volleyball team recently embarked on a successful road trip, going 2-1 on the weekend. The Bear Cubs demonstrated their resilience and competitive edge, returning home with two crucial wins as they continue to rack up preseason wins.

Match 1: SRJC vs. Lemoore College

In the first match of the road trip, SRJC faced off against Lemoore College. The Bear Cubs came out strong, displaying their offensive prowess and disciplined defense. Outside hitter Katy Brenninger led the charge, with 7 kills and 2 aces. Middle blocker Kiana Walker was right behind with 6 kills and 3 aces, helping provide a balanced offense.

Freshman outside hitter, Madison Shaw, led the team in digs with 13. The Bear Cubs won the match convincingly, securing a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-16, 25-22).

Match 2: SRJC vs. Taft College

Following their win at Lemoore, SRJC traveled to Taft College for their second match. The Bear Cubs continued their strong form, showing excellent teamwork and adaptability. Taft College put up a strong fight, pushing SRJC in each set, making for a completive match.

Brenninger delivered a standout performance (19 kills and 3 solo blocks) that provided huge momentum pushes. Walker was dominant at the net, both offensively and defensively, providing 14 kills and 1 block assist.

The setting duo of Sierra Yates-Bruch (21 assists and 13 digs) and Natalie Walsh (23 assists) kept the Taft defense on their toes, effectively mixing up the offensive plays. Jaiden Brooner's defensive efforts were vital, with a season and team high of 41 digs. She was consistent throughout the match, keeping the ball in play and allowed SRJC to capitalize on transition opportunities. The match was a hard-fought battle, ultimately ending in heartbreak for the Bear Cubs (20-25, 25-27, 25-17, 23-25).

Match 3: SRJC vs. Cerro Coso College

With a tight turn around, the Bear Cubs were able to recover and regroup, handling Cerro Coso College in a 3 set sweep (25-14, 25-11, 25-19). Shaw led the 12 services aces, while Brenninger provided 10 kills in an impressive fashion. The team had a season high hitting percentage of .360, wrapping up the road trip on a high note.

Looking Ahead

The road trip to Lemoore and Taft showcased SRJC's ability to perform under pressure and maintain their focus away from home. Their next challenge will be on the road again, heading to the San Joaquin Delta College Tournament, this Thursday through Saturday, where the Bear Cubs will open the tournament against Fresno City College at 10:30am on Thursday, September 5th.
