Bear Cubs fight off Gladiators - Beat Chabot 72-60

            Tuesday the Gladiators (5-7) of Chabot College made the afternoon drive north from Hayward to take on the Bear Cubs (3-3). The visitors jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a field goal and a 3-pointer by Kendra Grant. Ashleigh Barr's putback with 8:00 on the clock got the Bear Cubs on the scoreboard. After a Gladiators' field goal, Tal Webb drained a 3-pointer, and Kierra Johnson banked in a putback a minute later to tie the score at 7 apiece. Twenty-one seconds later the Gladiators hit a 3-pointer. Tal Webb sank her second 3-pointer at the 5:29 mark. Twenty-nine seconds later the Gladiators put in another 3-pointer. The Bear Cubs scored the next six points on Barr's putback, Lizbeth Zavala's 3-pointer, and Barr' single free throw for a 16-13 margin with 3:03 left in the quarter. The Gladiators added one more field goal, and Trinity Hawkins scored on a drive with 1:12 remaining, as the Bear Cubs held an 18-15 lead by the end of the period.

            Kierra Johnson recorded the first two points of the second quarter on a putback. The Gladiators tied the score within 48 seconds on a 3-pointer and a field goal. Ashleigh Barr hit an 8-footer and Johnson made one free throw about a minute before Kendra Grant tied the score again with her second 3-pointer. Trinity Hawkins' 3-point-play and Alex Ditizio's steal and layup gave the Bear Cubs a 28-23 lead at the 5:21 mark. After a Gladiators' field goal, Trinity Hawkins banked in a driving over-the-shoulder 3-footer. The Gladiators edged ahead, 31-30, on Grant's 3-pointer and three free throws by her teammates with 2:06 on the clock. Tal Webb caught the cross-court pass from Hannah Webb and swished the 3-pointer. With 55 seconds left, Hannah Webb passed to a cutting Trinity Hawkins, who then completed the 3-point-play. Grant sank her fourth 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining, to get her team to 34-36 by halftime.

            In the third quarter Kierra Johnson scored first on a 2-footer after she cut down the lane and Trinity Hawkins passed her the ball. Two minutes later Ashleigh Barr hit an 8-footer. The Gladiators made their first basket of the third quarter at the 6:02 mark. Trinity Hawkins dropped in a driving 8-footer, and then Barr hit a turnaround 6-footer with 5:27 on the clock to increase the lead to 44-38. The Gladiators scored their last field goal of the period with 3:45 remaining. The Bear Cubs scored 9 unanswered points on Tal Webb's fourth 3-pointer, Lizeth Zavala's drive down the middle of the key, Rose Nevin's 2-footer, and Tal Webb's fast break layup with 26 seconds left. Mikee Lopez drew a shooting foul with 10 seconds to go and sank both free throws, to cut her team's deficit to 40-53.

            Kierra Johnson again scored the first basket of the quarter after cutting along the baseline and catching the pass from Trinity Hawkins just to the left of the hoop. Kendra Grant scored inside for the Gladiators, and then Ashleigh Barr hit a turnaround 5-footer to put the Bear Cubs ahead 57-42 at the 8:26 mark. Twenty-two seconds later Mikee Lopez swished a 3-pointer. Lizeth Zavala scored on a drive, and then Grant sank her fifth 3-pointer. Ashleigh Barr put in a turnaround 4-footer, and Kierra Johnson scored on a fast break layup after catching the pass from Lizeth Zavala in stride with 6:28 on the clock, for a 63-48 lead. The Gladiators responded with an 8-0 run on consecutive 3-pointers by Lopez and a pair of free throws by Dede Franklin to close the gap to 56-63 with 4:06 remaining. Trinity Hawkins drained a big 3-pointer 21 seconds later. Lopez scored a field goal, and Hawkins sank two free throws. Lopez scored the Gladiators' final two points of the game with 2:20 left. The Bear Cubs scored twice more— Hawkins's drive and Alex Ditizio's putback—to make the final score 72-60.

            With the exception of the third quarter, in which the Bear Cubs outscored the Gladiators 17-6, the rest of the time the two teams seemed to exchange baskets. The Bear Cubs grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and scored on six of their second chances. The Gladiators pulled down 8 offensive rebounds and put back one. As a team the Gladiators sank 11 3-pointers with Kendra Grant making 5 and Mikee Lopez 3. The Bear Cubs made 6 3-pointers, four of them by Tal Webb. Grant and Lopez both totaled 19 points each.

            Trinity Hawkins led the Bear Cubs in scoring with 19 points. Three other Bear Cubs scored in double figures—Ashleigh Barr with 15, Tal Webb 14, and Kierra Johnson 11. Lizbeth Zavala added 5 points, Alex Ditizio 4, Lizeth Zavala 2, and Rose Nevin 2. Ashleigh Barr and Kierra Johnson both recorded their first double-doubles of the season, as Barr grabbed 11 rebounds and Johnson 13. Lizbeth Zavala, Lizeth Zavala, and Hannah Webb each passed for 3 assists. Kierra Johnson blocked 4 shots.
