Bear Cubs Split Big 8 Doubleheader VS. Sierra College

On Friday, the Bear Cubs (8-6, 1-3) hosted the Sierra College Wolverines (7-10, 3-1) in a Big 8 Conference doubleheader. In game one, Jordan Baughn got the start on the mound for the Bear Cubs, retiring the side in the opening frame. Haley Wyatt put Santa Rosa up early with an RBI double in the bottom of the first. After two more scoreless innings by Baughn, the Bear Cubs added another run via an RBI single by Nataya Brown. After cruising through the fourth inning, Sierra looked poised to get on the scoreboard. With a runner on second and one out, a base hit shot up the middle looked to score the Sierra runner, but Olivia Gabriel threw a dart to the plate for the out. The Bear Cubs held onto a 2-0 lead entering the sixth inning, but the Wolverines put up four runs in the inning, taking a 4-2 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Bear Cubs tied the game on a two-run single by Hailey Martin. Jessica Hernandez, who relieved Baughn midway through the sixth inning, kept Sierra off the scoreboard in the seventh, but the Bear Cub offense could not capitalize. The game went into extra innings. Hernandez threw another scoreless frame in the top of the eighth. With Gabriel on third bases from a one-out triple, Mallory O'Keefe hit a shallow fly ball to left field. After the catch Gabriel bluffed toward home, inducing an errant throw to home plate, allowing her to score as the Bear Cubs walked off Sierra.

Hailey Martin was the starting pitcher for game two of the doubleheader. Sierra struck first with a run in the first inning. The Bear Cub offense could not get anything going early. The Wolverines added another run in the third inning. Nataya Brown tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. Sierra answered back immediately with a run in the fifth, retaking the lead, 3-2. In the bottom half the Bear Cubs put up two runs via a Haley Wyatt sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Hailey Martin, giving Santa Rosa a 4-3 lead. In the seventh inning, Sierra scored two runs, taking the lead once more. Down 5-4 in the last inning, the Bear Cubs had a runner on third with just one out but could not score. The Bear Cubs split the doubleheader.
