SRJC Volleyball has concluded the 2017 season having earned a seventh place seed in the Northern California Regional Playoffs. On November 21 however, the team came up shy in a five set loss over Butte College, who they had beaten in five earlier in the season.
In spite of the loss, this was a proud moment for the Bear Cubs as it was the highest the team has finished in five seasons despite being forced to take nearly a month off due to the Santa Rosa wildfires. From late October until the end of season, the volleyball program had to fit three matches in a week, mostly on the road, leaving the team little spare time to make any adjustments in practices. However, the coaching staff reminded the ladies that there were no excuses, and that they must continue to fight hard for their team goals. Fortunately the love that was received from the other teams, and the fighting mentality helped the Bear Cubs get back to somewhat level ground; they, therefore, could not thank the other volleyball programs in the state enough for their support and generosity. Fortunately SRJC Volleyball paid forward this kindness as well donating a full car of food, clothes, toiletries money and beyond to local teams and agencies.
SRJC should feel proud of their thoughtfulness as well as their hard work during the season. In addition, sophomores Katie Williams and Emily O'Brien have something more to smile about as they were selected for the Big 8 All-Conference team. They are both team captains and a crucial component to the program. The Bear Cubs graduate seven sophomores this season, and look forward to the further development of the freshmen as well as new incoming student-athletes.
The team would like to thank the fans for packing the stands this season, and traveling to every match they had, even as far as Quincy, as well as the amazingly supportive staff in the training room and the Disability Resource Center. See you all next season, and Go Bear Cubs!
