In their second game of the CCSF Golden Gate Classic, the Bear Cubs (7-3) were matched against the host Rams (10-3), who had defeated the West Los Angeles Wildcats (4-4) in the first round, 66-58. The Rams jumped out to a 10-0 lead, prompting Coach Campbell to call a timeout with 7:42 on the clock. When play resumed, it took 12 seconds for the Bear Cubs to put two points on the scoreboard, thanks to Lizeth Zavala's left-handed toss from the middle of the key. Seventeen seconds later, the Rams made one free throw. The Bear Cubs proceeded to score 10 unanswered points on Lizeth Zavala's putback, Ashleigh Barr's 3-pointer, Lizeth Zavala 10-footer, Ashleigh Barr's outside shot on an inbounds play, and Ciarah Michalik's single free throw to go in front 12-11 at the 4:51 mark. The Rams turned the tables on the Bear Cubs by outscoring them 12-2 the rest of the period, to vault ahead 23-14.
Ashleigh Barr's layup 36 seconds into the second quarter was followed by a Rams' field goal within 12 seconds. Trinity Hawkins quickly answered with a 2-footer. Two minutes later Ashleigh Barr's 10-footer closed the deficit to 20-25. The Rams put in the next two field goals, then the Bear Cubs scored seven points on Hawkins' 3-pointer, Tal Webb's 14-footer, and Rose Nevin's inside shot to get to 27-29 with 3:03 on the clock. With 1:32 left, the Rams made their last two points of the quarter. The Bear Cubs finished the period in a flurry with Ciarah Michalik's scoring drive and Lizeth Zavala's 3-pointer to take a 32-31 lead into halftime.
Tal Webb scored the first three points of the third quarter when she pulled down an offensive rebound, banked in the putback, and then sank the and-one free throw. One free throw by Rose Nevin and back-to-back 3-pointers by Ashleigh Barr and Tal Webb stretched the lead to 42-33 at the 5:32 mark. Trinity Hawkins' two field goals in a row from close range made the score 46-38 with 3:45 left. The Rams tallied six more points during the remainder of the period, while Trinity Hawkins made one free throw, and Ashleigh Barr sank a close shot then hit a 14-footer, giving the Bear Cubs a 51-44 advantage.
Lizbeth Zavala dropped in a high-arcing 3-pointer to start the scoring in the fourth quarter. The Rams sank two field goals to close to 48-54 with 8:20 on the clock. Nearly two minutes later Trinity Hawkins added a point after making the second of two free throws. The next time down, Lizbeth Zavala swished another 3-pointer. With 4:51 left the Rams scored their final field goal of the game on a drive, to put the score at 50-58. Ciarah Michalik intercepted a pass near half court and drove down to score the layup. The Rams made three free throws, and then Hawkins made one. The Rams tallied their final two points on a pair of free throws with 42 seconds remaining. Coach Campbell called a timeout to advance the ball to the front court sideline and draw up an inbounds play. Tal Webb passed to Trinity Hawkins, who got open near the basket and banked in the 1-footer. The Rams missed their shot attempts and were forced to foul. Lizeth Zavala made both of her free throws and Tal Webb one, resulting in a final score of 66-55.
The Rams started the week ranked #10 in the State and #4 in the North. The Bear Cubs were ranked #11 in the North. Both teams played tough defense, forcing numerous turnovers—26 by the Rams and 21 by the Bear Cubs. Most of the stats were comparable, with the exception of 3-pointers. The Bear Cubs put in 7 out of 18 attempts, while the Rams sank 3 out of 16.
Ashleigh Barr posted her second double-double in a row with 16 points and a new season-high of 15 rebounds. Trinity Hawkins also scored 16. Lizeth Zavala scored a season-high 11 points. Tal Webb added 9 points, Lizbeth Zavala 6, Ciarah Michalik 5, and Rose Nevin 3. Ciarah Michalik passed for 6 assists and Tal Webb for 4. Trinity Hawkins made 4 steals.
