Last tournament opens with tough loss to San Francisco

             For their final pre-conference action the Bear Cubs (4-7) traveled to San Jose City College for the Lady Jaguar Invitational, where they had to face #4 in the North City College of San Francisco (11-2) in the first round. The Rams won the tipoff and scored in less than 20 seconds. Sadie Irvine answered with a driving pull-up jumper. Hayley Louzao hit a short shot from the middle of the key the next time down the court. Then the Rams hit a 3-pointer. Zaina Depina's field goal with 7:58 on the clock put the Bear Cubs ahead for the last time at 6-5. The Rams finished the quarter with a 15-0 run, including three 3-pointers, to hold a 20-6 lead.

            The Rams started the second quarter with the ball and within 10 seconds scored a 3-pointer. Madison Barsuglia hit the Bear Cubs' first shot of the period. After another Ram 3-pointer, Angel Bernardi's field goal got the Bear Cubs to double digits, 10-26. Following the Rams' third 3-pointer of the quarter, Tiffany Salinas hit a short shot with 4:00 on the clock, which was succeeded by two free throws by Sadie Irvine and one by La Donna Saint Louis, making the score 15-33. In the remaining three minutes, Salinas added a field goal and one free throw, and Irvine two more from the charity stripe, but the Rams tacked on two 3-pointers and three field goals to go into halftime ahead 45-20.

            La Donna Saint Louis started the third quarter with two field goals in a row. Then after five Santa Rosa misses, Hayley Louzao and Tiffany Salinas made back to back baskets, which reduced the deficit to 30-47 with 5:14 on the clock. After three unsuccessful trips on offense, the Bear Cubs scored three field goals in a row—one each by Meme Nicolis, Angel Bernardi, and Jenny Eggers—to get the score to 36-53 with 1:48 left in the period. But Destiny Kelly erupted for eight straight points, including two 3-pointers in the last 33 seconds, to make their lead 61-37.

            Both teams struggled to score in the frantic first three plus minutes of the fourth quarter. Zaina Depina's 3-pointer at the 6:04 mark made the score 40-61. The teams each made two trips to the free throw line in the next two minutes, but the Rams made all four of their shots, while the Bear Cubs only made half of theirs. Caprice Taylor scored the Rams' final eight points on two 3-pointers and two free throws. For the Bear Cubs Jenny Eggers added a field goal and three free throws, and Angel Bernardi a single free throw with 14 seconds left to make the final score 48-73.

            The Rams dominated during the first half, but both team scored 28 points each in the second half. The Rams finished with 14 3-pointers, after making 9 in the first half. The Rams came into the game ranked 5th in the state in 3-pointers made per game with an average of 9.5. Kelly finished with a game-high 21 points and Taylor with 13.

            None of the Bear Cubs scored in double figures. Tiffany Salinas led with 8 points. Jenny Eggers added 7 points, Sadie Irvine and La Donna Saint Louis 6 each, Angel Bernardi, Hayley Louzao, and Zaina Depina 5 each, and Madison Barsuglia and Meme Nicolis 3 each. Louzao and Salinas each grabbed 8 rebounds. Irvine led with 3 steals and 2 assists.
