SRJC 52, San Jose City College 64

In their final pre-Big 8 game, the Bear Cubs (5-8) took on the host team (6-8) in the Consolation Finals of the San Jose City College Tournament. The Jaguars' post player, Jhaina Stephens, scored the first field goal of the contest on a shot from inside the key. Sadie Irvine's two free throws tied the score 71 seconds into the game. Stephens scored the next four points on another close shot and two free throws. The Bear Cubs missed their first 8 shot attempts before Zaina Depina finally sank a 3-pointer at the 5:12 mark. The Jaguars put in seven more points before Tiffany Salinas sank the Bear Cubs' second basket. Salinas' offensive rebound basket made the score 9-15. After Jenny Eggers' putback with 1:52 left, the Jaguars added one more field goal to put the score at 11-19. The Bear Cubs rallied with five straight points on a Salinas field goal and Irvine's 3-pointer just before the buzzer to close the gap to 16-19 at the end of the quarter.

Stephens scored again to start the second quarter, which marked the beginning of a 7-0 Jaguar run. The Bear Cubs recorded their first points of the period on two free throws by Destiny Grayer with 5:59 on the clock. By the time the Jaguars scored their last points of the quarter at the 2:05 mark, they were ahead 33-24. Again the Bear Cubs rallied to score six points on three consecutive field goals--two by Jenny Eggers and the last by Tiffany Salinas with 31 seconds left--to make the score 30-33.

The Jaguars started the scoring in the third period with a 3-pointer. Sadie Irvine answered with a field goal, then Stephens sank two in a row over defenders to stretch their lead to 40-32 with 8:10 left. A field goal each by Ashley Hart, Salinas, and Eggers still left the Bear Cubs behind 38-45 with 3:25 remaining. The Jaguars made five free throws before the quarter ended, and Angel Bernardi scored on a drive with 17 seconds to go to make the score 40-50.

Stephens' successful one-handed shot over a defender in front of the basket came on the Jaguars' first possession of the fourth quarter. The host team added one free throw before La Donna Saint Louis' 3-point play at the 8:47 mark made the score 43-53. The Jaguars sank their final basket of the game with 8:20 remaining to extend their lead to 55-43. The Bear Cubs scored the next six points on three free throws by Jenny Eggers and one field goal and one free throw by Zaina Depina, to pull to 49-55 with 3:04 to go. But the Bear Cubs were unable to get any closer and were forced to foul in the final minute. The Jaguars made 9 out of 10 free throws, while the Bear Cubs were only successful on Sadie Irvine's 3-pointer with 43 seconds to play, resulting in a final score of 52-64.

The Jaguars shot extremely well, making 21 out of 46 shots (46%). The Bear Cubs only made 20 out of 73 shots (27%). At the free throw line the Jaguars made 18 out of 25 (72%). The Bear Cubs made 82% of their free throws, but they only took 11, making 9 of them. Four Jaguars scored in double figures, with Jhaina Stephens leading with 20 points.
