Women's Basketball: Bear Cubs take Consolation Championship

             In the Consolation Final of their own tournament, the Bear Cubs (2-5) took on the Eagles of Mendocino College (1-7). The Bear Cubs had to chase down the ball on the tipoff but eventually worked the ball into the low post where Ashley Hart scored. The Eagles sank a 3-pointer on their first possession. Then Zaina Depina put in her own 3-pointer. Following an Eagles' miss, Sadie Irvine drove down court and drew a shooting foul. She made both free throws, and the Eagles quickly sank a field goal. During the next five minutes the Bear Cubs went on a 13-2 run. The Eagles scored two consecutive field goals to cut their deficit to 11-20 with a minute left. Tiffany Salinas banked in a short shot then the Eagles hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds on the clock. The Bear Cubs pushed the ball for a quick shot, and Sadie Irvine was fouled on a 3-point attempt with one second to go. She made all three free throws for a 25-16 lead at the end of the quarter.

            The Bear Cubs started the second quarter with three unanswered field goals in the first two minutes. The Eagles sank three out of four free throws, making the Bear Cubs' lead 31-19 before Sadie Irvine's 3-pointer at the 3:56 mark. The Eagles finished the quarter with one field goal and three free throws, while the Bear Cubs made four field goals and two free throws for a 44-24 lead going into halftime.

            The Bear Cubs began the third quarter with the ball and Tiffany Salinas scored on a post move. Two minutes later Zaina Depina scored on a drive, right after the Eagles had made one of two free throws. Sadie Irvine's 3-pointer three possessions later put the lead at 51-27. During the remaining 6:24, the Eagles just added 8 out of 8 free throws, as the hosts made three field goals and one free throw, making the score 58-35 at the end of the period.

            Jenny Eggers scored four points in the first minute of the final period on a field goal and two free throws. Then 5'1" Leksi Lincoln sank a field goal for the Eagles, followed by another Eggers' field goal. Lincoln quickly hit another field goal. After Angel Bernardi's successful drive, Destiny Grayer's 3-pointer, and Eggers' field goal, the Bear Cubs were up 72-39 with 6:26 remaining. Lincoln made a field goal and a 3-pointer in the next 95 seconds. Hailey Riley completed the scoring for the Eagles with a 3-pointer and two free throws with four minutes to play. The Bear Cubs finished off with one free throw and one field goal each by Grayer, Depina, Hayley Louzao, and Eggers for an 81-49 victory.

            The Bear Cubs made 29 out of 62 shots (42%) while their defense held the Eagles to 13 out of 66 (17%) shooting. They outrebounded the Eagles 59-35. The Eagles made 19 out of 24 free throws (79%) while the Bear Cubs made 17 out of 29 (59%).

            Sadie Irvine led the Bear Cubs with 16 points and 6 steals. Three other Bear Cubs scored in double figures: Jenny Eggers with 12, Zaina Depina 11, and Tiffany Salinas 10. Destiny Grayer added 9 points, Angel Bernardi 7, Meme Nicolis 6, Ashley Hart 4, Hayley Louzao 4, La Donna Saint Louis 2. La Donna Saint Louis led in rebounding with 8, while Angel Bernardi and Ashley Hart each grabbed 7.
