Bear Cubs warming up

In the second round game of the College of the Sequoias Tournament, the Bear Cubs had to face the host team, who began the week as the #3 team in the North. The Giants won the tipoff, scored first, and never gave up the lead. They started by making three field goals and three 3-pointers during the first six minutes of the game to jump out to a 15-5 lead. The Giants shot well and played with confidence, as all but two of their players are sophomores. On the other hand, the Bear Cubs looked shell-shocked and unsure of themselves. The Giants scored the last five points of the half and by halftime, the Bear Cubs were deep in a 19-40 hole.

The Giants didn't let up in the second half and seemed to score at will. The Bear Cubs didn't grab their first defensive rebound of the half until the 11:29 mark with the score 32-63. The host team just had too many good shooters for the Bear Cubs to contend with, and they continued to lose ground, falling behind 41-71 with 6:06 remaining in the game. No matter who was on the floor for the Bear Cubs and what adjustments they tried to implement, they couldn't make a dent in their deficit, finally losing 51-89.

The Bear Cubs were out of sync offensively and committed 34 turnovers during the game, 21 in the second half. The Giants made 29 out of 66 shots (43.9%) in the game, including 11 out of 27 (40.7%) from beyond the arc. The Bear Cubs made 19 out of 48 shots (39.6%) but made only 2 out of 9 (22.2%) of their 3-point attempts.

Jenna Dunbar didn't shoot well but still led the team in scoring with 15 points, including 6 out of 10 free throws. Brooke Santander did shoot well, making 5 out of 6 shots, including one 3-pointer, for 11 points. Sarah Arteseros contributed 7 points and was the top rebounder with 8. Alicia Mehtlan and Brittney Rachuy each tallied 4 points, and Cayla Chandara converted a 3-point play on a drive to the basket. Vai Thompson, Annie Studdert, and Amber Hart each added 2 points, and Niambi Saint Louis 1. Jenna passed for 4 assists and Sarah made 3 steals.
