San Diego City College stunned the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs 72-64 Friday in the first round of the state championships in Southern California.

The California Community Collegiate Athletic Association (CCCAA) game started with strong defense by both teams. Points were hard to obtain and SRJC had a 12-5 lead five minutes into the game.

But San Diego was not intimidated and went on their own 9-0 run, taking the lead 14-12.

At the half, San Diego had a three-point lead.

The game plan stayed the same for both teams as defense controlled the game.

With 10 minutes left in the game, it was tied 46-46. This is when San Diego took over the game.

SRJC looked out of breath and the bench was not supporting the starters.

Little by little, San Diego started going on runs and taking the game away. The Bear Cubs could not make their layups and struggled from the three-point line.

The final score was 72-64.
