Santa Rosa – Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) head athletic trainer Dr. Monica Ohkubo has been selected as the Athletic Trainer of the Year by the California Community College Athletic Trainer Association (CCCAA). Dr. Ohkubo’s peers in the state have recognized her for the substantial contributions she has made to the field of athletic training, impacting provision of health care to student-athletes in the state of California and beyond.

The work Dr. Ohkubo has done to keep SRJC at the forefront in concussion management, she has played a pivotal role in efforts to hire athletic trainers at all Santa Rosa City Schools (SRCS) high schools, volunteering her time to provide direction and support to these newly established concussion management programs. As a result of these efforts, SRCS student-athletes will be safer as they practice and compete.

Dr. Ohkubo was invited to contribute to a national consensus statement paper on medication management by the sports medicine team and was instrumental in developing legislation for the CCAA addressing concussion management and environmental policies. Dr. Ohkubo recently completed her doctoral research study addressing the role and value of pre-athletic training programs. Along with SRJC Dr. Brianna Scott, Psychology Department faculty, and Dr. Nancy Chinn, Disability Resources Department faculty, Dr. Ohkubo is currently co-authoring a study on concussion education and reporting in collegiate athletes.

“SRJC values the work that Dr. Ohkubo does each day to maximize the health and performance of our student-athletes,” said Dr. Chinn. “She accomplishes this while overseeing a pre-athletic training program that leads students to success in athletic training and other related fields. We are pleased that she is receiving this recognition so that others can be inspired by her contributions, commitment, and scholarship.”
